Teaching IT security with SMU Whitehats!

Our head instructor was invited to give a talk at an Internet security with JavaScript and JSP conference. The conference, headed by Whitehats members Poon Swee Heng and Wong Wai Tuck, introduced its participants to the dangers of security vulnerabilities in software.

During the conference, participants were taught on how to build an e-commerce website that features login and shopping cart functionality in the earlier half of the one day course. This was subsequently used to demonstrate how simply being code-literate doesn’t guarantee a secure server. This was demonstrated through exposing the security vulnerabilities within the websites that were built.

The conference was a success that featured media coverage from the Straits Times as well as attention from various media outlets. Conference participants also felt that the talks were insightful and provided great exposure to glaring vulnerabilities in systems and processes used by many firms today.
